You’re Not on the Team!

When I saw Cass’s Tweet the other day looking for guest bloggers, I quickly replied and asked her if she was looking for a specific topic or if I had free license to go “buck” wild. She responded back that speaking my mind was fine, so here I am.

I had several topics floating around inside my head, but since this is my first time on her blog, I thought I would go with something seasonal. Since fall is rapidly approaching us, there no better topic than football. The cool Saturday and Sunday afternoons filled with food, beer, and the sounds of grown men shouting fanatically for their favorite teams.

Now let me start by declaring a few things. I love football. I don’t really have any interest in other sports. Basketball, football, hockey, and NASCAR could end tomorrow and I wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep. I live for the months from September to February and don’t want to speak about any other topic from 9 am Saturday mornings to 9 pm Sunday night. There’s a small break and then I am back in the zone for Monday Night Football. I usually watch my games at one of the local bars to get the total football ambiance as well as mingle with my fellow football brethren. But there is a disturbing trend that has gained momentum and I need to address it, Grown Men and Their Jerseys!

That’s right! Grown men should never wear another man’s football jersey. There’s no excuse. And why would you want to wear one? I am Cowboys fan (Bring on the boos and jeers) and I root for my team as much as the next guy. But, in no way, shape or form would I ever wear a Romo or Witten jersey. I know I am going to offend a lot of men and possibly their wives, but I stand by my reasons. What are my reasons you ask? Well here they are:

• You’re not on the team! Players wear jerseys because they are members of the team! They get paid to play and represent that football team. You don’t. The day the Cowboys start sending me a check to wear their crap, I will rock it like a champ. Until that day, hell no!

• Jerseys aren’t cheap! They are priced from $125 – $500. There are plenty of things that I can purchase with this money, like Groceries! Not to mention a portion of the proceeds from that Favre jersey you are wearing goes to Brett, who is already getting paid well by the team, and the rest go to the team itself. And contrary to what many NFL owners want you to believe, they aren’t broke or hurting for money.

• Fan is a derivative of Fanatic! You can support your team by simply rooting for them. My wife loves Boston Med (I like it too). She watches it every week. But I have yet to see her dress up in scrubs and then give me a play by play of the surgeries they performed that night. Ridiculous you say, no more so than your hubby or boyfriend recreating the winning touchdown pass in the kitchen while wearing a Drew Brees jersey.

• You’re not a kid or a woman! Kids and women get a pass. I get that little Johnny idolizes Peyton Manning and wants to grow up and be a quarterback. He will grow out of that stage by time he’s twelve and realizes he has no shot of ever getting to the NFL and needs to work like the rest of us. And women, well, they just look hot in jerseys so I am okay with them sporting them.

So those are the basic reasons for my disdain of grown men who wear football jerseys. I also think those guys have some deep seated issues from their high school football days, but I’ll save that rant for another post.
