The Gymboree Story

I’ve actually received a few requests to post this story on my blog since people seem to find it so amusing. So, for your reading pleasure, here is the Gymboree story.

Back when I was close to having the Man (maybe 2 weeks out or so), I went to the local outlets alone to shop. I was pretty miserable by that point; very big, waddled a lot, just over being pregnant. I was also entirely over people giving me THAT LOOK when they would ask how much longer I had to go. You know the look…”ohmigod she is so HUGE!!!!!!!!!”. In fact, a month prior, we went to the Olive Garden after my baby shower and the hostess that opened the door for me smiled and said it looked like I was ready to pop. I told her no, I still had a month to go. Her eyes got big and she exclaimed, “DAYUM!” Yes. Thank you for making me feel like a circus tent freak. Cue the pipe organs! Doo doo doo…

Anyways, back to the outlets. I went to the Gymboree outlet which, at the time, was a regular haunting place for me. I scoured the clearance racks (as I normally do…big frugal chick here) and found a few cute items. Paid for said items, patiently told the clerk that yes, I really had two more weeks to go, yes it’s really hot, yes my feet are swollen, YES I AM OVER BEING PREGNANT, grabbed my bag and left. Started waddling towards the opposite end of the outlet where the Carter’s store was. The whole while mothers were grabbing their children and shielding their eyes, grown men were shrieking from my girth…okay, that didn’t really happen. I sure felt like it though.

As I’m waddling along, I was sort of looking around at the various people walking by. I like to people watch. Call it an old habit from working in a comic store and Disney. I looked in front of me and up ahead a little ways down the sidewalk was a very pregnant women walking towards me. Bemused, I noticed that she had the same shirt that I did and wondered how many of those shirts Old Navy must have sold that summer (I actually ran into someone from an online message board wearing the same exact shirt as I was wearing one day and we laughed over that). As I got closer to the woman, I noticed that she had a Gymboree bag in her hand. I figured okay, this is pretty funny. I wonder how many grossly pregnant women go into Gymboree and get asked time and time again about how much longer they have, etc. I decided that when I got close enough to say something to the woman, I would make a joke about how funny it was that we had the same shirt on, were so gigantic, and went to Gymboree.

I raised my hand to say something to the her, and her hand went up.

It was only then that I realized that I had been walking towards a mirror and was staring at a reflection of myself the entire time.

To try and save face, I acted like “ohhh, I’m just raising my hand to smooth out my hair…” but I really think I looked like an idiot for waving to a reflection of myself.

And there you have it. Sad, but true story. It’s been dubbed “you pulled a Gymbo!”
